5 Things To Do This Weekend: June 22-23

A hospital rally, the Mermaid Parade, Tropfest and more.

It's summer, the sun is shining, and everyone is in a better mood. Let's take that positive energy and spread it at some of the incredible Brooklyn events this weekend.

1. Rally for Brooklyn's Struggling Hospitals
If you haven't heard, Long Island College Hospital and Interfaith are both facing cuts and possible closure. These issues impact all Brooklyn hospitals and emergency care options. On Saturday, June 22 at 10 a.m. join the Toddler Speakout and Stroller March. The group will meet at LICH Playground and walk to Borough Hall to "put Governor Cuomo on notice."

2. Get Some Sun with Other Cinephiles at Tropfest
The Tropfest experimental short film festival and art exhibition has come to the better borough. With 7-minute submissions from notables—such as Sam Worthington from Avatar and Joel Edgerton of The Great Gatsby—Prospect Park's Nethermead as the screening room and awesome DJ sets by acts like Neon Indian or Chairlift, there's a little something for everyone. The free awesomeness takes placeSaturday, June 22 at 3 p.m. but you must RSVP.

3. Strut Your Stuff at the Mermaid Parade
You can't keep a good stroll down! Despite facing financial hardships this year due to Hurricane Sandy, Coney Island Mermaid Parade organizers were able to raise enough Kickstarter funds to celebrate their 30th Anniversary and march down Surf Avenue this Saturday, June 22 at 1 p.m. So strap on a dorsal fin, slap on some sunscreen and take that milkshake to the edge of Brooklyn.

4. Get Some More of The Fab Four
Confession: I can't stand the Beatles. But pretty much everyone else across rest of the world loves 'em! If you fall into the latter group of people, take your fandom to the next level at Union Hall on Sunday, June 23 at 8:30 p.m. for The Beatles Sing-Along. An array of legendary televised performances will be screened with lyrics for Beatlemaniacs to chant and sway to together. Naturally, there is a costume contest to boot. Tickets are $8.

5. Frolic at Funday Sunday in Carroll Gardens
The annual street festival is back and better than ever. Stretching eight blocks along Smith Street between Bergen and Union Streets on Sunday, June 23 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., revelers can expect local craft vendors, special food stalls, live music, and little surprises at every turn. See you there!
