5 Things: New York Aquarium Re-Opens and Urban Gardening Workshops

Memorial Day Weekend happenings so good, you'll be glad you stayed in town.

1. Hit the boardwalk. Just because you've stayed in town doesn't mean that you can't head to the shore. NYC beaches openSaturday, as does a pared-down (but cheaper) New York AquariumLuna Park and other amusement areas and most importantly, the not-to-be-missed Sideshow, are up and running this weekend. If it's not as rainy as predicted, Coney Island is a perfect bike ride mostly on protected bike paths. 

2. Hear some tunes. If you're in the mood for music, on Saturday night there's Even Twice + Comic Tales of Tragic Heartbreak at The Way Station in Prospect/Crown Heights, Monocle at Union Hall in Park Slope and Gift of Tongues at Freddy's in the South Slope.

3. Chill with the kids. For something more low-key, there's a Free Playgroup and Music Class for kids between the ages of 9 months and 3 at JACK Theatre, 505 1/2 Waverly Ave., on Saturday, May 25, from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.

4. Immerse yourself in culture. We've mentioned it before, but it's big enough remind you: DanceAfrica, the ginormous festival of African Dance, takes place all weekend at BAM. See details here.

5. Get the garden in shape. If you're lucky enough to have some outdoor space, you know what Memorial Day Weekend means for you, kickoff to the planting season. Improve your skills with two events this weekend at Halsey Community Garden: Analyzing Urban Soil Workshop (3 p.m. Saturday) and Garden Pest Control DIY Workshop (noon, Sunday). 462 Halsey St., at Lewis Avenue in Bed-Stuy. both free.
