Then and Now: Sandy Floods Gowanus Canal

When Sandy struck one year ago today, the area of Gowanus became a danger zone thanks to severe flooding from the Gowanus Canal.

Much of the area near the canal was put underwater thanks to the 10-foot surges during Hurricane Sandy and the high tides of the full moon overnight. The Gowanus Canal flooded into the streets, buildings and homes. The Third Street and Carroll Street bridges were fully submerged, according to residents.

The photos above capture the canal as it looked the day Sandy hit, and a much more peaceful canal one year later.
