Tearing Down Tipis

Lean-to like structure have popped up in Prospect Park, but they will not stay.

Just along the few entrances on Prospect Park West three tipis sit in the wooded areas, leaning against trees.

There are more of these conical structures throughout the park too, one just needs to take a closer look. They do not have animal skins or any kind of covering, nor does it appear like anyone lives inside, but for Brooklyn, they'll do.

According to a spokesman for the Prospect Park Alliance, Paul Nelson, every couple of years a person or persons builds the temporary and movable structures, but no one knows who the guerrilla lean-to artist is.

“These are illegal structures that someone has erected in the park,” Nelson said. “When we discover them, they are dismantled.”

Nelson said that the PPA or the Department of Parks and Recreation does not have an exact number of how many of these structures they have taken down, but he did say that they may pose danger to park goers and this is the first sighting in a year.
