Residents Petition for Community Self-Defense Courses After Sex Assaults
Recent reports of sexual assaults in South Slope, Greenwood Heights, Sunset Park and Park Slope call for further safety measures in the community.
In response to of that have plagued the greater South Slope community since spring of this year, concerned citizens have begun petitioning Councilwoman Sara González, D-Park Slope, and the 72nd Precinct to provide free self defense classes for women in South Slope, Sunset Park and Greenwood Heights.
The petition was initiated by community member Teresa Ish. In a letter to Councilwoman González, Ish writes, "The recent attacks in our neighborhood are disturbing and disgusting, but rather than recommend that women carry rape whistles and find escorts to keep them safe, we should be empowering women to defend themselves."
The petition requests that classes be offered in English, Spanish and Chinese to best serve the community.
