Samba with the Sea Lions at Prospect Park Zoo!

Head to the zoo for the kick-off of Jazz: Brooklyn's Beat, a month-long jazz series.

If a sea lion can do it, so can you!

On Saturday, you can learn to do the samba along with the Prospect Park Zoo’s sea lions  at “Samba with the Sea Lions.”

The event, now in its fourth year kicks off Jazz: Brooklyn’s Beat, a month-long jazz series with six performances taking place at the , , , , Prospect Park and, of course, the .

The event was started in 2007 by , a partnership of the six cultural institutions listed above, and the radio station WBGO, said Essie Lasch, Heart of Brooklyn’s spokeswoman. The dance school Samba New York! leads the dancing.

Prospect Park Zoo’s sea lions have been part of the event from the beginning. It took the sea lions about a month, initially to learn their dance, and they continue to practice it throughout the year to keep it fresh, said Denise McClean, Prospect Park Zoo’s director.

“We’ve got great trainers,” McClean said.

What exactly do the sea lions, Beebe and Stella, do during the dance?

“They rock from one flipper to the other, a happy behavior that looks like dancing,” McClean said. “They seem to like it a lot.”

Samba with the Sea Lions takes place at the today from noon to 2:30 p.m. Event is free with zoo admission of $8, $5  for kids 3-12, kids under 3 are free.
