Rally Planned to Save the Double D Pool (Again)

The Gowanus Canal Superfund clean-up plan puts the decades-old Double D pool in jeopardy.

The Friends of Douglass Greene Park group is holding a rally tomorrow, Saturday, June 29 at 10:30 a.m. to protest the planned closing of the "Double D" pool in Thomas Greene Playground on Third Avenue.

As part of the Gowanus Canal Superfund clean-up plan, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed to excavate the pool and build a raw sewage tank in its place. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation also has a proposed plan that could endanger the Douglass and Degraw pool's future (nicknamed "Double D" because of it's location between Douglass and Degraw streets).

"We will herald the summer opening of the Double D Pool," Friends of Douglass Greene Park said in a statement. "The Double D has long provided summer heat relief to our communities, serving nearby public housing (Gowanus, Wyckoff and Warren) and brownstone neighborhood residents for over 40 years."

The rally will be held at the pool on Douglass Street between Third and Nevins Streets in Gowanus, Saturday, June 29 at 10:30 a.m.
