Not-for-profit organizations are a great resource for any community. Here's our list of five local groups that are doing great things for the community.  

The Fifth Avenue Committee

The Fifth Avenue Committee is a community organization that aims to help residents obtain affordable housing and other services. The committee has developed more than 600 units of affordable housing since it was founded in 1970.

CHIPS

Founded in 1972, CHIPS is a Christian charitable organization dedicated to helping the poor, needy and homeless. CHIPS runs a variety of programs, including a food pantry and women's shelter. Volunteers are always needed!

Imani House, a 17-year-old organization with a sister location in Liberia, is a nonprofit organization offering youth and family support services, particularly to low-income and immigrant families. Located in a small Fifth Avenue office, Imani House runs the P.S. 282 after-school program and offers adult literacy and ESOL programming, among other things.

Spanish Speaking Elderly Council, Raices

This citywide nonprofit has its main office on Atlantic Avenue as well as a at the .  The Council serves to improve the lives of low-income, Hispanic and black members of the community._ Each day at the center, breakfast and lunch are served and games and activities are held. Assistance is provided to the seniors in obtaining city services.

Easily visible on Fourth Avenue thanks to its brightly-painted building, Diaspora Community Services works to provide local immigrant residents with services such as health education, advocacy, counseling and general support. The center runs programs such as a Women's Empowerment Program, Nutrition Outreach Education and HIV/AIDS assistance.
