Money Raised by Prospect Park Walk-a-Thon to Help Fund Post-Sandy Cleanup in Park

Saturday's 5K will help repair and restore Hurricane Sandy's vast damage.

Hurricane Sandy’s damaged can be seen all throughout the five boroughs—flooded homes, fires, the subway shutdown, lack of electricity, gas and food supply.

The strong winds also unleashed its wrath in Prospect Park. According to the Prospect Park Alliance, more than 300 trees fell down or were severely damaged throughout the park’s 585 acres in the wake of the hurricane. Fences, lighting and playgrounds were also damaged from the 70-mph gusts and falling trees.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Prospect Park 5K Walk-a-Thon will be held around the park’s loop starting at 9 a.m. As of Friday afternoon, people have already raised $35,728.

All funds raised from the Walk-a-Thon will be dedicated toward the repair and restoration of the park. The PPA said that it will take months to remove and repair all of the damage done by Hurricane Sandy.

Alliance and Parks Department staff and financial resources will be diverted to the recovery effort, and their ability to continue recovery efforts, routine operations and park maintenance will require additional help from current and new supporters.

So, if you are interested in helping the park get back to its glory, one of the most immediate ways you can help is to lace up your sneakers and join the third annual Walk-a-Thon.

This year, you can either walk or run the Park’s 5K loop while the PPA is teaming up with NYC Runs to add a race around the loop.
