Celebrate the neighborhood's sudden decrease in population with these fun Memorial Day activities.

There’s no question about it – staying in the Slope while the majority of your neighbors empty out for places with beaches and front lawns can be a beautiful thing.

So if you’re sticking to the city this weekend, don’t think of yourself as “stuck.” Instead, take advantage of the lack of crowds with some of these fun Memorial Day activities:

BBQ at Brooklyn Boulders

Who needs a backyard to barbecue? Brooklyn Boulders is firing up the grills at 6 p.m. on Friday and offering $20 all you can eat hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers and beer, plus admission to bouldering and climbing walls. An extra 10 bucks buys your entry to a pound-for-pound hot dog eating contest beginning at 8 p.m.—whoever eats the most tube steak compared with their body weight wins a three-month membership to Brooklyn Boulder.

Kick Off Summer with Gowanus Grove

Gowanus Grove, the awesome canalside party space formerly known as the BKLYN Yard, kicks off its season on Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. with Mister Sunday and special guest Fourtet. They’ll also be slinging sausages from Mile End, tacos and huaraches from the Red Hook Ball Fields’ Country Boys, and nice cold drinks from Botanica.
