Maine Lobster Rolls From a Truck

The Red Hook Lobster Pound food truck, parked on Seventh Avenue, serves a delicious lobster roll.

If you haven’t had a lobster roll from the Red Hook Lobster Pound yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for.

Red Hook may be hard to get to, but the Red Hook Lobster Pound food truck, which parks on Seventh Avenue between Carroll and President streets every Saturday, makes eating fresh Maine lobster in Park Slope possible.

The lobster roll is $16, but it is worth it. The roll goes like this: a quarter pound of lobster claws and knuckles mixed with homemade lemon mayo on a bed of shredded lettuce with celery, scallions, a drizzle of butter and a pinch of paprika, all on a buttered JJ Nissen bun (Frankfurt rolls from Maine, especially made for lobster rolls).

This crustacean sandwich is absolutely delicious. The lobster meat is never frozen for the owners drive to Maine, a six-hour ride, and back with live lobster from the boat every week.

If you ever take the trip to their flagship store, on Van Brunt Street between Verona Street and Visitation Place, you’ll see the water tanks full of live lobster.

On Saturday, there was a consistent flow of hungry customers stepping up to the truck. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. they sold over 100 lobster rolls, according to Irene Pappas, who was working the food truck.

Some were regulars, coming to get their usual Saturday afternoon treat, but others were first timers. Either way, they were more than satisfied.

Jesse Peragine, who usually doesn’t eat lobster but has a taste for the Red Hook Lobster Pound’s, said the crustacean roll is light, well spiced and delicious.

“This is simply the best thing I ate this week,” Peragine said.
