In Response to Sex Assaults, Free Self-Defense Classes in South Slope

Councilwoman Sara González responds to local petition by South Slope resident.

Following an online petition initiated by South Slope community member Teresa Ish, Councilwoman Sara González, D-Park Slope, has announced that a series of free self defense classes will be held at CrossFit 718 and the Center for Anti-Voilence Education(CAE).

The appeal to Councilwoman González and the 72nd Precinct was issued after a that have been reported in this and surrounding areas since March.

Although she did not respond directly to Ish or other community members, the classes were announced shortly after the petition was filed.

With no attacker or attackers detained, police investigations are on-going and the possibility of further attacks in South Slope, Sunset Park, Greenwood Heights and Park Slope have become a reality local women must be prepared to face.

Classes at CrossFit 718 will begin this Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m. located at 712 Fifth Avenue between 22nd and 23rd streets. Classes at the will be held at at 511 Seventh Avenue near 17th Street, beginning Tuesday September 20, at 6 p.m.
