Holiday Happenings on Dec. 24 and 25

Plenty to do, no matter what you celebrate.

Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, there are still plenty of events to take part in right here in the neighborhood. From traditional church services to sketch comedy, we've made our list (and checked it twice).

December 24

 

One of the oldest churches in Brooklyn, St. Paul's has holiday services and activities on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The majority of the activities are on the 24th, with a 5:30 pm mass for families with young children, carols at 10:30 pm and a midnight mass immediately following.

Calvary Baptist Church of Red Hook 

Led by Pastor David Epstein, the church hosts a traditional Christmas service at 7:30 pm with candles, holiday carols and songs of worship. The church is closed on Christmas Day.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts the world premiere of the American Ballet Theatre's rendition of The Nutcracker. With over 100 dancers and a live orchestra, this is a holiday event that the whole family is sure to enjoy.

For many people in the neighborhood, Christmas is just another ordinary day. This local synagogue, the oldest continually running synagogue in Brooklyn, is no exception, with kaballat shabbat services taking place at 6 pm.



A weekly neighborhood comedy show at the features acts ranging from improv to stand-up, and the Christmas edition is promising special guests in addition to regular hosts SIDECAR and M.A.D. The $5 admission can be paid at the door.

December 25

Serving Brooklyn for over 150 years, this Roman Catholic church will have a Christmas mass at 10 am.

Led by Rev. Anthony J. Sansone, this church has been located in Carroll Gardens for over 125 years. Two masses take place on Christmas Day, the first at 9 am, the second immediately following at 11 am.

This long standing church will two have masses on Christmas day, the first in English at 10 a.m. and the second in spanish at noon.
