Help Bring Harvest Dome to Gowanus Canal

Piece hopes to help spark Gowanus Canal revitalization.

You may have seen a giant, floating orb made of discarded umbrellas and plastic bottles making its way around NYC waterways. Now the artwork could be on its way to the Gowanus Canal.

The piece, which lights up from within, had been floating on Spuyten Duyvil Creek in the Inwood Hill Park Inlet this summer. Now, the Gowanus Canal Conservancy hopes that the voyage and long-floating sojourn of Harvest Dome 2.0 along the Canal will bring attention to Gowanus Canal revitalization.

The challenge, however, is to be able to raise funds in time for the large barge and tug required to bring the Dome from Governors Island to the Gowanus Canal. The Trust for Governors Island requires that the Dome be removed this November, and the dome must arrive before winter. The dome would travel New York Harbor across the Buttermilk Channel, around Red Hook, and then into the mouth of the Gowanus Canal and up to the 4th Street Turning Basin.

A Kickstarter has been formed to help raise the funds, with only a handful of days remaining. Backers will be rewarded with photos, shirts, signed prints and more depending on level of donation.
