Looking for something fun to do with the family this weekend? Each Wednesday, we’ll take a look at all the fun stuff going on in and around Park Slope over the weekend.

Where/When: on Friday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.

Why Go: New York Times bestselling young adult fiction author Sarah Maclean shares her wisdom with neighborhood teens in this workshop. Teens will get a chance to write and collaborate with MacClean, author of The Season.

Cost: Free!

Where/When: on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.

Why Go: Grab the little ones and head to the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza, where storyteller, dancer and percussionist Caren Calder spins traditional African folktales. This is recommended for children ages 3 and up, and especially for children that love to dance! At the end of the performance, Caren will teach audience members a thing or two African dance.

Cost: Free!

Where/When: on Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday Feb. 20, all day.

Why Go: Bring your little chess star to compete against the best young chess players in the borough. The competition is open to K-12th graders, and everyone from novice players to budding chess experts!

Cost: $25 in advance

Chess for Teens

Where/When: on Friday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.

Why Go: If your teen isn’t quite ready for the big leagues, instead bring them to the Central Library to practice their game. Teens who get a kick out of a good game of chess will love the Central Library’s weekly chess games. All skill levels are welcome – from those just starting out to veritable chess masters.

Cost: Free!

Where/When: ArtsCetera on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 9:30 a.m.

Why Go: Let the little ones run wild! Every Saturday morning, Smith Street's ArtsCetera hosts a drop-in sing along and open play session for young children up to age 4 and their parents. Kids can sing and play in an unstructured environment.

Cost: $10 per family, up to two children
