Fun Ways for Everyone to Honor MLK

Park Slope and beyond offers tons of fun ways to celebrate MLK day.

From gospel to yoga, there are plenty of ways to honor MLK today.

The Main Event

’s 25th annual is likely the borough’s best known memorial for MLK. The day kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with performances by a capella group The Persuasions and the Reverend Timothy Wright Memorial Choir, along with an address by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The music will be followed by an address by author Walter Mosley.

After the festivities, at 1 p.m. there will be a free screening of "Neshoba: the Price of Freedom," a documentary about Neshoba County, Mississippi, where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964.

The line can be very, very long, so get there early.

For the Kids

The Brooklyn Children's Museum plays host to a variety of MLK day events, starting with a showing of the "I Have a Dream Speech," on film at 11:30 a.m. Next up, at 12:30 p.m., kids can get crafty at a a craft session focusing on the work of Coretta Scott King. The craft session is followed by a special poetry and dance tribute to Coretta Scott King at 1:30 p.m. performed by students from Aspire’s Pinnacle School of Dance. The activities for the day will wrap up at 2:30 p.m. with "Big Ideas about Freedom!," a show looking at  historic and present-day struggles for freedom, social justice and human rights. The best part? Admission to the museum today is free.

For the Spiritual

Honor MLK in a less obvious way at ’s on Union Street. Participants will honor Dr. King with a day of yoga, meditation and community cooking. Participants can pick just one work shop, or stay all day. More on registration costs and details ,

For the Family

Head to the Old First Reformed Church on Carroll Street for a day of MLK activities that will be fun for the whole family. The Brooklyn Community Chorus presents its Third Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Family Sing-Along, with musical performances galore, arts, and other activities. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
