Community Board Rejects Methodist Expansion Plan

Crowd protests expansion at Community Board 6 meeting.

New York Methodist Hospital's large expansion plan, which has been met with resistance by community groups, was rejected by Brooklyn Community Board 6 at a meeting Thursday night.

According to a source with Preserve Park Slope, the variance was denied by the community board at the meeting at John Jay. Methodist representatives were on hand to present the project, which had undergone revisions after initial resistance from the community.

The meeting saw many locals come out in protest of the expansion, which would include a 300,000 square-foot expansion and the demolition a cluster of Brownstones on 8th Avenue.

Preserve Park Slope recently filed an online petition with Change.org against the expansion, which was signed by over 500 locals.

The recommendation by Community Board 6 is a key to the process, but Methodist is moving forward with its plan to acquire the variances it needs. The full Community Board will vote on the plan Dec. 11. The city Board of Standards and Appeals has the final decision.
