The Gowanus Canal Conservancy and the Gowanus Alliance are hosting an event to help beautify the playground between 11th and 12th streets, followed by a party!

Do you find it hard to catch some shade in Gowanus?

Well, come help two organizations that focus their efforts to make the Gowanus Canal area more beautiful, cleaner and greener by weeding, watering plants and taking care of street trees in and around Ennis Playground.

The Gowanus Canal Conservancy and the Gowanus Alliance are hosting a “Clean and Green Community Celebration” on Saturday, May 26. The event will continue building public stewardship and gardening at the playground between 11th and 12th streets and Second and Third avenues.

Last fall, the groups hosted an event in Ennis Playground where people planted shrubs, 100 perennials and more than nine trees.

After the weeding and watering, there will be a “public party” with food, drink and educational activities.

There will be volleyball games, barbequed sausages, burgers and veggie burgers (thanks to Alex Meat and Whole Foods). There will also be two weaving workshops: recycle t-shirts and recycle fleece into rugs.

Other activities will include chalk drawing, water balloon games and more.

The gardening and cleaning will begin at 11 a.m. and the public party will start at 1 p.m., starting with food.
