Check Out This Whiz Kid!

Demar Ayee is this week's Whiz Kid.

School of Research senior Demar Ayee only immigrated to the United States three and a half years ago, but in that short time he has made a lasting impression on his community: the East New York resident is an avid volunteer and member of his student government who is bound for DePauw University in the fall on a full scholarship. The busy 17-year-old made some time to chat with Park Slope Patch this week.

You’re headed to college soon! Are you excited?

I really am – it’s college, so I’ll be one step close to a career. And I’m a little excited to leave New York. I come from Jamaica, and Indiana is more like Jamaica in some ways – it’s more rural. I like being in more rural areas.

What kind of career do you want to have?

I’d like to be a diplomat of some kind, or to do something to do with languages. I plan on majoring in French and studying Spanish, too. I took French in Seventh and Eighth grades and I really loved it. I like the language, and the culture is very vibrant.

Do you miss Jamaica?

I do. But coming here there were a lot more opportunities available to me. I couldn’t imagine getting a scholarship in Jamaica to DePauw. And my teachers here have helped me to become more resourceful and confidant. They motivated me to not just do well in school, but get involved with the community.

What is your favorite subject in school?

History. There is something just really interesting about history. I loved studying the French Revolution, the Age of Enlightenment, World War II and the Cold War.

What do you like to do outside of your studies?

Mentoring. I am a part of a mentor program and I really value my relationship with my mentee. He’s really great, he’s like my little brother.
