Be in the Know: Sign up for Notify NYC

Official alert system provides the latest info on weather, school closures, subway disruptions and traffic advisories in the city.

How do you know if you need to get in doors because a serious storm is headed your way? You’d probably jump on the computer, or turn on the TV, right?

But, what if the power goes out and you need to know what’s going on throughout the city, especially about school closures, subway or road reports?

To help keep yourself in the know, sign up for Notify NYC, the City’s official emergency notification system for the latest info on weather, school closures, subway disruptions and traffic advisories in all areas of the five boroughs.

During power outages, Notify NYC will send you text message alerts to help provide you with up-to-the-minute info you need to help deal with, and keep safe during, a natural disaster or any other emergency situation.

“We know [Hurricane Sandy] has been a devastating hit for our region and we know that one of the most pressing needs for New Yorkers now is access to timely, accurate information about the status of essential City services, transportation disruptions, as well as access to where to find food, water and shelter,” read a statement from Notify NYC.

Take a minute and go to Notify NYC’s website, www.nyc.gov/notifynyc, or follow @NotifyNYC on Twitter. Anyone can sign up and customize the alerts they would like to receive based on the zip code for their home, child’s school or office location.
