The Professional Face Framers
At Eye Shoppe on 7th, you can leave it up to the experts to pair you with the perfect eyeglasses.
Don't even think about grabbing a pair of glasses from the shelf at Eye Shoppe on 7th and trying them on for yourself.
"We're not a self-service store," owner Michael Stoff said. "What makes our glasses work is the fact that we'll sit down with you and help you choose a frame that actually fits your face correctly."
He continued: "I don't want to sound like a commercial, but just trust us. We'll do a good job. Quality and service."
It's clear that Stoff, who has run the tiny shop on the corner of Seventh Avenue and President Street since 1990 with his wife, Paula, really knows his eyewear, and that knowledge carries through to the surprisingly expansive selection, which Stoff claims in the largest in the Slope.
"Every year I travel to Europe and go to the trade shows and buy the newest styles," Stoff said. "Most of our frames are exclusive to this store. You can't find them anywhere else in Park Slope, or most eyeglass stores in Manhattan, for that matter. Because we've gotten to know these companies before they became famous, they seek us out. Hot companies want to be with us, because we're known for being precision optometrists. And that's what sets us apart."
When asked if he gets lots of repeat customers, Stoff asked the gentleman who happened to be stopping by to pick up contact lenses how long he'd been purchasing his glasses there for.
"Since I graduated college, so I guess that would be about 15 years now," he responded.
"Your mother was one of my first customers," replied Stoff.
"I live all the way down by Ninth Street, and I work in the city, but this is where I shop," said the customer. "I know that they'll get it right."
Along with his wife Paula and his trusty salesman Andy Park, who previously worked for the venerable Sol Moscot in Manhattan, it's clear that this team really enjoys what they do.
"I love working on glasses," said Michael. "I love coming to work every day. It's fun."
"We care what you look like," added Andy.
While most other eyeglass stores in the neighborhood have decreased in size over the years, Eye Shoppe on 7th's business is so booming that they've purchased a second space a block away, four times the current size.
"We're growing. We're moving on up," Michael said excitedly. "The entire store will be computerized, it's going to be outrageous. It's going to be one of the most high-tech eyeglass stores in the city. We'll use a technology that will take 3-D pictures of your face so you can see how you really look in a pair of glasses, as opposed to just looking in the mirror. We'll be the only store in Brooklyn with this technology, and there's only one store with it in Manhattan."
Over the course of our conversation, it became increasingly clear that Stoff's main goal wasn't to just sell you a pair of pricey glasses.
"We're frame stylists," said Michael. "We want you to go home with the right style, and one that fits perfectly on your face. When you look in the mirror, you're not just looking at your own reflection. You're looking at a reflection of us."
