Summer Statement Pieces at 4 Play Brooklyn

Cocktail rings, cuff bracelets, and breezy dresses populate the Seventh Avenue boutique.

Summer in New York brings certain sartorial limitations: there are only so many clothes you can put on your body before everything becomes too hot, too wrinkled, and too damp. Choose anything too elaborate and it will wilt like a peony in the humidity.

The best solution to this summertime challenge is to stick with simple minimalist apparel and go all out on maximalist accessories. You can stock up on both at the Seventh Avenue boutique 4 Play Brooklyn (near 10th Street), but their selection of statement jewelry at friendly prices is uniquely fabulous.

Most of these bright, fun options are displayed around the cash register, and the simple pricing system turns rooting through the piles of baubles into an easy treasure hunt. All the earrings on one rack are $19, from subtle facet-cut dangling stones to giant gold-tone filigree hoops. Mermaid hues of turquoise and jade feature prominently.

A little gold box on the counter contains a bounty of giant cocktail rings, all of them $24. A gold-tone ring with a big coral stone holds secret, glittery depths and looks good enough to eat. And don’t worry if your fingers swell up like little sausages in the hot weather—many of the rings have adjustable bands.

Cuff bracelets are all $29, and range from clean and simple knotted designs to bold southwestern styles. For a slightly more subtle option, 4 Play offers monogram bracelets made of recycled brass by Alex & Ani ($22).

Candy-colored beaded necklaces ($29) and bracelets ($10) are made from hand-rolled magazine pages by a fair-trade operation in Uganda. Profits from the store’s fair-trade products go to the aid organization Keep a Child Alive.

On the slightly higher end of the spectrum, 4 Play features necklaces by Vanessa Mooney. An oval-shaped pendant with a rough green stone encircled by gold ($68) reminds me of Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights.” Mooney also makes an organic-looking hunk of gold on a double-stranded gold-tone chain ($48) and a simple but lovely strand of beads that mixes metals for a warm, summery glint.

For a softer metallic touch, go for a striped woven scarf in sandy tones with gold and silver threads for $22.

Since you can’t step out of the house wearing only jewelry and scarves, no matter how hot it is nor how big your rings are, check out 4 Play’s racks of dresses ($49 to $198).  With brands like Free People, Yumi Kim, Veronica M. and Synergy, you’ll find a kaleidoscopic range of prints and solids, in silhouettes slouchy, tailored, or tight. For a pairing with the more baroque accessory options, choose one of Synergy’s simple cotton dresses ($89) in blue or gray with decorative top stitching. To set off simpler jewelry, there’s a silky rayon dress in a richly-hued ikat print ($49).

Once you’ve got your accessories-to-dress proportions right, pack up your summer reading into one of 4 Play’s great casual totes. Gorgeous organically-dyed woven bags, hand-made in Laos ($128) come in orange, blue, and beige options.

Top it all off with a spritz of sultry, beachy Marine Sel fragrance from Tokyo Milk ($32), and you’re all set to beat the heat.
