South Slope Residents Rally to Keep Neighborhood Safe

Concerned locals take matters into their own hands

Neighborhood organization Safe Slope has announced South Slope Take Back the Night March, which will meet at the Prospect Avenue R station and travel to Fourth Avenue and 17th Street.

Originally slated for September 8th, members of the Safe Slope organization have changed the date to September 14th in order to get the word out and gain further support for the final event.

Recent incidents of stabbings, robberies, attempted rape and other crime around the neighborhood have many residents of Parks Slope, South Slope and nearby neighborhoods concerned - and determined to make a change.

Safe Slope and neighbors urge all concerned citizens, residents and supporters to join them in the cause for a safer neighborhood for all.

yes the answer is... too many trees. Not the incompetence of the police, particularly at the 72nd precinct. There is a clear correlation between number of trees and rape attempts. Of course, why didnt I think of that?

Jay, I think Julia is saying that it's very dark on the streets she mentioned because the trees are blocking some of the street lights. She was suggesting cutting some of the trees to allow more light to hit the sidewalks, thereby possibly discouraging crime.

As you may know, increased pedestrian-level lighting is used as a crime-prevention tool in many communities/countries though there seems to be some dispute as to how and whether it works.

How about leaving the trees alone and installing more street lights. If one light goes out on a block than half that side of the street is in total darkness. Same for the parkside.

How about we stand up to predators, let them know not everyone wants to be victim.
