Sing and Save

Guvnor's Vintage Thrift is encouraging shoppers to belt it out, for a discount.

You’ve heard of singing for your supper, but at one Park Slope clothing store you can now sing for a discount.

Last Sunday, Fifth Avenue thrift store Guvnor's Vintage Thrift began inviting shoppers to step up to the mic and work their pipes for a 10 to 25 percent discount on their purchases.

“I love to sing, personally, and I love that this gets customers involved in the store,” said owner Suzette Sundae. “Plus, everyone that works here is a musician or DJ.”

On select Sundays from 4 to 7 p.m., shoppers can drop by the sprawling space and pick from a growing selection of over 60 songs, including Bowie, Blondie, The Clash and Patsy Cline (they'll take requests, too). Customers will belt it out with a mic and the lyrics to the song, while Guvnor’s plays the song’s karaoke track over the shop’s PA system.

Afterwards, the lucky singer gets to pick their discount card from a glittering top hat, revealing just how much they’ll save on the store's eclectic vintage fashions.

“Last week only one customer did it, but during our test run the weekend before that we had people dying to do it,” said Sundae, who added that in the future the shop might offer free beer to help lubricate shy singers.

Sundae said she hopes the idea might inspire her customers to have a little fun — and just maybe inspire her own musical endeavors, as well.

“I always wanted to be in a band,” she said.
