Satisfying a Mexican Craving

The Huaraches at Tacos Nuevo Mexico are a satisfying meal or snack

Located on Fifth Avenue between 11th and 12th streets, Tacos Nuevo Mexico is somewhat of a savior to West Coast transplants like myself.

Sure, there is better Mexican in Brooklyn (namely 30 blocks up in Sunset Park), but Tacos Nuevo Mexico is a solid standard. For Mexican food lovers, it boasts just enough authenticity to satisfy any manner of Mexican cravings.

Though the spot moved next door to fancier digs a few years back, the food has remained the same: the mole sauce is fantastic, pozole is classic and the huge, over-stuffed burritos are as good as any burrito has ever been. One standout is the huaraches—black beans sandwiched between a thin corn cake, lightly grilled and then topped with refried pinto beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cotija cheese, sour cream, red and green sauces, and a choice of either a variety of meats or the vegetarian option.

An order, for $4.95, comes with three huaraches, plated to resemble a Mexican flag with red sauce on one side, green on the other and cheese and sour cream in the center. It is an indulgent comfort food, heavily laden with all the things that make Mexican so delicious (fatty sour cream, spicy sauce) but made interesting by the corn cakes, a slightly sweeter, thicker alternative to a tortilla.

It is filling, especially for the price—great as a snack, or a meal if you add a taco or two.

And what could be more seasonally appropriate, than dinner in red, white and green?
