Park Slope: Meet Brooklyn Breeder

Allison Pennell is coloring the blogosphere with her own vision of parenting blogging.

There’s a new blog on the block.

Effed in Park Slope’s Allison Pennell is now bringing her own brand of sass and parental humor to the blogosphere with Brooklyn Breeder, a new blog all about parenting in Brooklyn (Park Slope, of course, included).

Pennell, also a contributor to parenting publications like Parents and babble.com, started the blog earlier this month after a sudden, unexpected split from FIPS.

“When we finally got to the point that FIPS would bring in money, I wanted to be able to reap the rewards with [founder Erica Reitman], and she didn’t envision that,” said Pennell of the split, which was otherwise amicable. “I felt like I didn’t have any choice but to move on.”

And move on she did. Pennell said that Brooklyn Breeder is less a final destination and more a “waystation” on the way to what she envisions as her own mini blog empire.

While entertaining Brooklynites with posts about things like the continuing saga of the Pavilion movie theater and parenting gone wrong on Brooklyn Breeder, Pennell is also working on getting a new site called Urbanistan up and running. The site would be not only a place for Pennell to share her own insights and wry commentary, but a whole network of urban bloggers contributing to one site.

“It’s a much bigger and more ambitious project, trying to get people to write about all the silliness that goes on in their lives,” said Pennell, who hopes to launch the site before the end of the year. “It will be a bigger pool with a much broader group of voices. It will be New York-centered, but with other outposts.”

“It would be sort of like a Patch, but not really newsy,” she said. “What I really want to do is find hilarious, top-notch reportage.”

She said Brooklyn Breeder will eventually get the same treatment, with “a whole guild of funny parenting voices from the neighborhood.”

In the meantime though, you’ll find Pennell blogging away at Brooklyn Breeder on a daily basis, informing the world about Anthony Weiner’s Park Slope roots and puppy parenting.

“I love writing about all this interesting silliness in Park Slope. I definitely have an opinion,” said Pennell. “But I try to feed on more of a self-deprecating bent, I’m laughing at myself more than I am at anyone else.”
