DWI Cop Caused Fifth Ave. Crash

Authorities have confirmed that Officer Sergio Gonzalez caused a horrific crash in Park Slope last week.

A police officer arrested for driving under the influence caused a gruesome car crash on Fifth Avenue, authorities have confirmed.

In the early morning hours of March 15, a drunk Officer Sergio Gonzalez slammed his 2007 Dodge Charger into the back of a taxicab. Gonzalez didn’t stop, but instead sped down the street, where he collided with a police vehicle and a parked car near Fifth Avenue and Sixth Street.

Gonzalez then stumbled out of his car, appearing drunk and possibly drugged, according to a criminal complaint. The cab driver and Gonzalez’s two fellow police officers all sustained minor injuries – including a serious gash to the forehead that required the cab driver to get stitches.

No drugs were found at the scene, but officers did find two hypodermic needles in Gonzalez’s car. Gonzalez was arrested at the scene at approximately 1:17 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence.

Gonzalez was off duty at the time and has since been suspended from duty due to his arrest, according to police.

Gonzalez was arraigned and released on his own recognizance last Tuesday afternoon. He’ll head to court on May 4 to face allegations including driving under the influence, criminal possession of a hypodermic needle and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Attempts to reach Gonzalez’s attorney were unsuccessful.
