Daylight Saving Time 2013: Five Fun Facts

Annual loss of sleep takes place 2 a.m. Sunday March 10.

It's that time of year again when we all get to lose an hour of sleep for the sake of a little more daylight. 

Daylight Saving Time for 2013 takes affect at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, so move your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed tonight. You’ll get your hour of sleep back on Nov. 3.

To the edge off the pain of sleep deprivation, here are a few fun facts about the annual event:

1. Benjamin Franklin among the first people to suggest Daylight Saving Time, writing in a 1784 essay that adjusting the clocks in the spring could be a good way to save on candles, according to Discovery.com. However, it wasn't adopted until World War I, when Germany and Austria adopted it to save on fuel in 1916. Other countries followed suit, with the United States adopting it in 1918, according to webexhibits.org.

3. If Daylight Saving Time seems early this year, that's because the U.S. moved it three weeks earlier in 2007.

4. The 2 a.m. time change theoretically causes the least amount of disruption to a person's sleep schedule. 

5. Indiana didn't adopt Daylight Saving Time throughout the entire state until 2006, according to Wikipedia.
