Pizza is a difficult and explosive subject. Everyone has their favorite slice, their favorite place to go for a pie and then there is the best piece of pizza.

In Brooklyn, home to Grimaldi’s and countless other parlors that reach the upper echelons of greatness, pizza is everywhere.

South Brooklyn Pizza, tucked away just off Seventh Avenue on First Street, makes a fantastic pizza. Their margarita was the best thing I ate this week.

The margarita pie is made with La Valle Italian tomato sauce and is generously spread over the dough, then three different cheeses are placed on top. They use fresh mozzarella, that sits in big blotches and does not cover all of the red sauce. Then they put on fontina. The kicker, and what gives the pizza most of the flavor, is shredded grana padano.

The finishing touches are fresh basil leaves and a sprinkle of olive oil. The finished product is a beautiful, artisanal pizza pie.

A fresh slice is a perfectly cooked triangle of crunchy pizza, decorated with cheese, sauce and basil—it almost looks too good to eat.

The fixings, to enhance the already delicious and superb flavor, are olive oil, roasted garlic cloves and hot Italian chili peppers. These additions, which sit in bowls on the counter, are free and beat any garlic powder or chili flakes.

Yes, the slice costs $4 and a pie is $25 ($10 more than Roma down the street) but its totally worth it. 

It is the best damn thing I ate this week. Period.
