A PB&J Cookie at Naidre's

This cookie helped our writer to get over her childhood fears of the combo.

Peanut butter and jelly is one of those things I still find myself burnt out on from childhood.

My younger brother, Brandon, went straight from baby food to PB&J and refused to eat anything else until he was at least five – he loved it so much that it was even, in fact, his first word. As the less picky child, I was often the victim of my brother’s eating habits, relegated to meal after meal of grape jelly and Skippy (smooth, of course) on white bread.

The idea of the sticky/sweet combo still makes me a little uneasy, so it was with extreme apprehension that I ordered a flourless “peanut butter and jelly” thumbprint cookie from the bakery case at on Seventh Avenue between 11th and 12th streets. Were it not for the gushing reports of a Naidre’s barista, I never would have considered it at all.

I’m not quite sure I’m ready to revisit the sandwich version of this combo, but I am sold on this cookie.

The cookie itself is just like Mom used to make them – super peanut buttery-y, with that crunchy, almost grainy texture that makes the cookie crumble the moment you bite into it. Filled with grape jelly, it’s a toothsome little bite. An updated twist on the childhood classic, this cookie was certainly delicious enough to get me over my fear of all things peanut butter and jelly.

Wash it down with one of Naidre’s jasmine green iced teas (or perhaps one of their new Counter Culture coffees, over ice) and you have the perfect foil to any sweet tooth.

Now maybe one of these days, I’ll sit down and give the good old-fashioned peanut butter and jelly sandwich a second chance.
